Prayer Shawl Ministry

For it was you who formed my inward parts;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works; that I know very well.

Psalm 139:13-14

Care and the love of knitting (and crocheting) have been combined into a prayerful ministry at St. Andrew.  The gift of a prayer shawl reaches out to those in need of comfort and solace.

Many blessings are knitted into every shawl.  The needle worker begins each shawl with prayers for the recipient.  Intentions are continued throughout the creation of the shawl.  And then when the shawl is completed a final prayer is offered before the shawl is sent along its way.

As this gift has been sent along, some recipients have continued the kindness by making one themselves and passing it onto someone in need.  This the blessing is rippled from person to person, with both the giver and received feeling the unconditional embrace of love.

Those undergoing medical procedures; experiencing an illness or recovery; those in need of comfort after a loss, during bereavement or while experiencing birth of a new baby or nursing a baby; ministering to others; extension of friendship or a bridal shower gift are all good reasons to give a prayer shawl.

Please call the St. Andrew office if you’d like to request a shawl for someone who needs to be wrapped in the hugging, healing and loving embrace of God.

Or you may join this ministry.  We would love to see you!

The Prayer Shawl Ministry began in May 2006 when a church member’s mother received a shawl while she was hospitalized.  That member was so touched by the comfort the shawl brought to her mother that she decided to start the ministry here.

The needle workers meet monthly for fellowship and to share the completed shawls.
