All students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades are welcome to join our Confirmation program. The Confirmation program is designed to meet many of the intellectual, social, and spiritual needs of our middle school students at St. Andrew. Through large group instruction, small group interaction, worship notes, and the St. Andrew Sampler, students grow in their relationships with God, one another, and God's creation. They learn about Evangelical Lutheran theology and practice, and are motivated for ministry and mission. The St. Andrew Sampler is tied to our Core Values—God Care, Earth Care, Community Care, Neighbor Care, and Self Care. Students are asked to participate in ministry opportunities that fall under each of these Core Values. Confirmation students are strongly encouraged to participate in at least one retreat per year and at least one week of Confirmation Camp during the three year program. By interacting with their peers and caring adults, students explore questions of faith and life in a challenging but safe, supportive atmosphere.
At the end of the three-year program, students have the opportunity to affirm their baptism and to receive the renewed commitment of the congregation at large to walk with them on their faith journey.
We follow a three year cycle of classes: Luther's Small Catechism (2012-2013), Old Testament (2013-2014) and New Testament (2014-2015). This year we will be focusing on a study of Luther’s Small Catechism and Lutheran Worship Practices, including planning and leading the Transfiguration Day (February 10th) worship service. By taking a close look at these teachings, we hope to come to a better understanding of our role as followers of Jesus in today's world.
We use the Augsburg Fortress curriculum "Here We Stand". Information about this curriculum can be found at their website: http://www.herewestandconfirmation.com
Texts include the "Here We Stand Student Book" and the "Here We Stand Student Bible". Both are provided to our students when they join the program. Lessons are presented in an age-appropriate format, tailored to the needs of middle school students. Large group presentations are followed immediately by small group conversations, where students are encouraged to explore questions related to the topics at hand. In addition, resources are available for families to encourage conversations about what is being discussed at Confirmation class. We see this as a journey through what can be a complicated time in the life of a middle school student, and hope to provide as much support as possible as families walk this way together.
Students are welcome to join us at any point along the way. We strive for an interactive, lively conversation! Please feel free to come and try out a class. Contact one of our leaders for more information: Pastor Mark Brocker or Pat Christiansen.
